Job Description

Description

The Office of the Attorney General is seeking applicants for an experienced attorney to serve as an Assistant Attorney General (AAG). The position is a fellowship sponsored by Progressive State Leaders Committee (PSLC). The PSLC supports state attorneys general in opposing predatory lending, price gouging, or other scams targeting vulnerable communities, defending safe and legal gun safety measures, defending laws that seek to protect the right to vote and ensure every eligible vote is counted, protecting state residents from harms resulting from unlawful federal actions, orders, and rules, protecting access to reproductive health care and safeguarding marriage equality and access to public accommodations free from discrimination.

More information about the PSLC can be found at This is a one-year fellowship position and is expected to be extended for at least an additional year, contingent on funding and OAG business needs. The PSLC pays for the AAG's salary and full health and vision benefits. Under the structure of the fellowship, the appointed attorney will work solely under the direction of the OAG but will be an employee of the PSLC.

The AAG will be assigned to the Civil Litigation Division (CLD), which handles the most significant and challenging litigation that the State of Maryland confronts. The Division represents State agencies and officials in high-profile and significant civil lawsuits involving State programs. The work of the Division includes defending the State in lawsuits brought by gun rights advocates and pharmaceutical, energy and social media companies challenging the constitutionality of Maryland laws designed to protect citizens from gun violence, discrimination, price gouging and harmful sales practices. This is a unique and exciting opportunity to contribute to the rule of law in Maryland.
The Assistant Attorney General will be responsible for litigating complex and high-impact cases in federal and state courts. Additional responsibilities include drafting pleadings, legal briefs, motions, and discovery, as well as responding to emergency litigation involving constitutional questions.

Experience: Candidates should have at least six years of litigation experience. Substantial experience in federal court is strongly preferred. Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills are essential. A demonstrated commitment to public service and high-impact litigation is highly desirable. In addition, knowledge of federal administrative law and constitutional issues is preferred. Applicants must be admitted to the Maryland Bar (or eligible to waive in). Although this position is funded by PSLC, the salary range will be based on experience and in accordance with OAG's salary-setting processes to ensure pay equity among employees.

Submission: Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and a list of three professional references, including at least one current or former supervisor.

Employment Benefits:

Working for the Office of the Attorney General offers a competitive benefits package designed to support your health and well‑being.
