Job Description

The City of Topeka’s Criminal Prosecution division is seeking a licensed attorney to join its team as an Assistant Attorney. This is an excellent opportunity to gain courtroom experience, develop strong litigation and research skills, and make a meaningful impact in the community through public service.

What you'll do:

  • Prosecute pro se and court appointed represented misdemeanor and traffic cases in Municipal Court under the direction of the Chief of Prosecution and/or the City Attorney.
  • Prepare pleadings, memoranda, legal briefs and other documents for review.
  • Respond to questions from the public and city staff regarding city ordinances, state statutes and city policy.

The ideal candidate:

  • Has knowledge of Federal and State statutes and City ordinances.
  • Is skilled in organization and time management.
  • Has the ability to prioritize tasks and exercise sound judgement.
  • Possesses excellent communication skills with the ability to explain statutes, ordinances, policies and procedures to all levels of the community and organization.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school is required.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the state of Kansas.
  • Demonstrated experience in the legal field is required.
    • Two years of experience in the legal profession as a licensed attorney or intern is preferred.
  • Must pass an extensive background check, including a Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check.

Annual Entry Salary: $65,781 - $77,220 depending on qualifications
